Dorm life sounds fun. You finally have a room where you can do whatever you want without your parents or siblings barging in. But hold your horses; living in a college dorm can quickly turn into a nightmare. And if you have an annoying roommate, things can go left-field in the blink of an eye.

Since this is probably your first run at ‘adulting’, we’ll provide you with some useful hacks to make your dorm experience pleasant.

Get an annoying alarm

In college, nobody has the time to wake you up. So, you need to find an alarm tone that annoys the heck out of you. Don’t choose a catchy song because you might find yourself dancing to the tune in your dreams.

If your roommate complains about the alarm clock, have a discussion with them and come to a compromise.

Become a serial recycler

No matter what you think about recycling, it will save your butt in college. You can use plastic cups more than once (nobody cares). Paper and plastic bags from grocery stores can be used multiple times before going into the trash. You can also repurpose pizza boxes into dustpans, or convert a box of cookies to a receptacle for jewelry and other stuff.

Recycling will save you a lot of money by reducing the amount you spend on miscellaneous items.

“Clean Up Your Room!”

As the saying goes, “Clean up your room before you can change the world.” If your room is clean, the following will happen:

  1. You will quarrel less with your roommate.
  2. The room will have a refreshing essence.
  3. You will no longer seek excuses to stay away from the dorm.
  4. Your workspace will contain only relevant materials.

Save Space

An excellent way to make your room look tidy is by conserving space. College dorms are not that big, and you have to share the limited space with others. Fold your clothes and place them in drawers or cupboards. Keep your belongings compact and lightweight, if possible.

When the fun stops, stop!

Of course, you can have as much fun as you want. But you must know when to tone it down. Be considerate of your neighbors, and don’t try to extend the fun more than necessary. Even if you have a party in your roommate’s absence, clean up the room before they return.

On the other hand, if you have neighbors that party almost every day, confront them politely. If they don’t heed your pleas, report it to the administrator. If you don’t want the confrontation, apply to move to another dorm. Nothing is more valuable than your peace of mind.

Ultimately, these life hacks will help you enjoy a stress-free time in any college dorm. Respect your space; respect others’ space. Save money by recycling, and clean up your room!
